Most people, especially those living in states with open primaries are not registered members of a political party. Until about 4 weeks ago, I wasn’t either. The Republicans fairly obviously, had nothing for me, I think Libertarians are idiots, and the Green Party is a joke. The Democrats, while they may have been the “logical” choice when I was 18 and an idiot, showed themselves time and again to be not the party of the people, but a party that merely signaled at the people while enacting legislation that hurt those who voted for them. And, most recently, to be the party that couldn’t beat Donald Trump.
So, as of four weeks ago, I’m now a registered member of the Democratic Socialists of America. The DSA, currently does not run a candidate, but it does endorse people like Keith Ellison and Bernie Sanders for office. It also promotes change, not just of the economic variety, but also anti-racist, anti-war, and other social justice measures, which are too often missing from the platforms of the major parties. It is also a great source for learning political theory about socialism and political action. More concretely, the DSA also provides opportunities to meet and work with fellow comrades whether it is at local chapter meetings or through national telephone conferences, as well as other organizing efforts, such as supporting strikes and protests. It also offers some great people to follow on Twitter.
Joining a party is a fantastic way to get started if you are looking to make a difference after the election, but aren’t sure where to begin.
So Check out the DSA and start making a difference today.
