The Democratic Party announced this week they will be open to endorsing and financially supporting anti-abortion candidates that in upcoming elections. While it may come as a surprise to those who watched Bernie get heat from the Dems for stumping for a non-pro-choice candidate, or saw the applause and praise Clinton got during her defense of abortion rights during the campaign, this tactic is just a logical outcome of the Democrat’s current dead-ender campaign strategy.
The Democrats, since the rise of Bill Clinton’s “Third-Way” politics in the 90’s, have been a party without a rudder, purposefully turning themselves into a corporatized money making machine, while moving away from the policies that helped develop their current base. The current Democratic Party, while it certainly claims to maintain the heritage of FDR and Kennedy, looks absolutely nothing like the party of those two Democrats. It is this corporate turn that has clouded and deluded the Democrats message making it completely insubstantial and worthless.
The Democratic Party, while it has never been perfect by any stretch of the imagination, did at one point stand for something. If you voted Democrat, it essentially meant that you were voting for increased government spending on domestic programs like Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, etc etc. There were also at various points social justice wings of the Democratic Party working to decrease racism, sexism and the injustices of the police state etc etc. Their efficiency remains up for debate, but at one point in time you could at least count on the Democrats to speak about and defend these ideas. This led, pretty much directly, to the Dems essentially controlling the House and Senate from FDR until the midterms under Obama. A cohesive message, and policies, led directly to electoral success. It also, to slightly digress, kept the Republicans fairly in line. Because the Democrats refused to budge right on many things, the Republicans were forced to move left, instead of the Dems moving right which is currently happening.
None of this is currently happening now, however. With the rise of the Clintonite Third Way Democrats, “Blue Dog Democrats”, and “Radical Centrists”, the Democratic party has essentially become the “fiscally conservative, socially liberal’ meme. This platform is meaningless beyond signaling to corporate concerns that the Democrats won’t do anything to disrupt their cash flows. It allows for people like Jim Webb, who once bragged about killing people in Vietnam, to exist alongside Democrats like Joe Manchin, who supported all of Donald Trump’s Cabinet appointees, and it means that Kamala Harris, an anti-Trans, anti-abortion, pro-prison Senator is poised to become the face of the party. Bernie Sanders, basically running slightly to the right of FDR, is too liberal for the Democrats. The Democrats, historically the party of labor, didn’t support a $15 minimum wage, or promote unions, or support health care, all things people need and want. Instead, they ran, and continue to run, on Silicon Valley-type “skill creation” bullshit. This is to say nothing of the social justice wing of the Democratic party, which while it had high-profile victories for LGBT-marriage rights, does nothing to end the prison state, or materially enhance the lives of disenfranchised people it supposedly speaks out for, and, often works directly against those interests.
